The Center for t he Study of Race\, Ethnicity & Equity and our partners are proud to wel come Heather McGhee as 2 024 Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Heather will be giving a public talk on February 1st at 6pm in Graham Chapel. We hope that you wi ll help us spread the word and join us as we kick off Black History Month a nd engage with Heather\, a national thought leader dedicated to equity.
Over her career in public policy\, Heather McGhee has crafted legislatio n\, testified before Congress\, and helped shape presidential campaign plat forms. Her book\, "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together\," spent 10 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list an d was longlisted for the National Book Award and Carnegie Medal for Excelle nce in Nonfiction. The New York Times called it “The book that should chang e how progressives talk about race.” Starting at Fairgrounds Park in North St. Louis City\, where a riot was sparked after the first Black St. Louis r esidents attempted to swim at the newly desegregated pool at Fairgrounds Pa rk\, McGhee chronicles the sobering history of divide and inequity across t he United States. However\, she implores the reader to reframe equity\, mov ing away from a “zero sum” mindset to an inclusive perspective in which eve ryone can thrive.
