Residency

Why did you choose WashU for your residency?
“Several important motivating factors drove me toward WashU Ob/Gyn for residency. First and foremost, I was looking for a program that would train me to become an excellent Ob/Gyn physician-surgeon, especially relating to gynecologic surgical skills. WashU is notorious in this regard for molding elite, confident surgeons who are comfortable with the most complex cases. I also wanted to train somewhere that was academically strong and could provide me the mentors and research opportunities to match to any top fellowship across the country (if I so chose). WashU also provides this in spades, with all the fellowships represented in-house and alumni going all over the place in every sub-specialty each year. With my extensive background in health policy/advocacy research, Wash U’s location on the Missouri-Illinois border was also attractive as providing a unique balance between advocacy and family training opportunities. Finally, but very importantly to me, CULTURE! The residents and faculty at WashU are incredibly friendly, helpful, and all-around cool– which shined through during my interview social/day.”

What are you looking forward to the most by being a resident here at WashU?
“Tough question! So so much. Excited to scrub in and help perform my first c-section. Pumped to hit the L&D floor and bring life into the world. Can’t wait to get some minimally invasive/robotic hysterectomy action. But most of all– excited to become a competent, well-trained doctor-surgeon and get to serve the wonderful St. Louis patient community.”

What goals do you hope to accomplish during your residency?
“Hmm, one goal is to discover my calling/passion within the field of Obstetrics-Gynecology. Whether that is general practice or a sub-specialty. In addition to becoming an excellent clinician-surgeon, I also hope to develop into a physician leader, whether via my role in direct patient care or in a more academic/departmental way. I also look forward to developing my research abilities and hopefully be able to add to the body of evidence in our field. Finally, I want to become a dependable, invested mentor to students and future residents here at WashU!”

What are your research interests?
“Not completely sure just yet. But I have always been passionate about health policy research! Clinically, I could also see myself participating in minimally invasive/gyn research projects.”

What do you do outside of work?
“I’ve enjoyed exploring the many fun things to do and great restaurants in St. Louis. I also love meandering through beautiful Forest Park when its nice out. Also enjoy playing some tennis and catching gym time whenever I’m off work.”

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?
“I rescued–and subsequently raised/rehabbed– a pet squirrel during medical school. His name was Pete– he was the freaking best and cutest.”

We know it’s early, but do you have any fellowship plans for after residency?
“I really am not sure just yet. Maybe MIGS…or REI!”

What advice would you give medical students applying for a residency in OBGYN?
“Carefully think about your residency “pillars.” What is most important to you? For me, it was 1) excellent clinical/surgical training, 2) resident/faculty culture, 3) program strength/recognition, 4) research/fellowship preparation and opportunities, 5) location/proximity to family”
