Inclusive Excellence Speaker Series 2023: A conversation about “Critical Race Theory” with Kevin Brown

11:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Connor Auditorium, Farrell Learning & Teaching Center (FLTC)

Inclusive Excellence: Kevin Brown

The WUSM Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is thrilled to host Kevin Brown, the Richard S. Melvin Emeritus Professor of Law at Indiana University Maurer School of Law and the Mitchell Willoughby Professor of Law at University of South Carolina School of Law, as a keynote speaker during Black History Month. Prof. Kevin Brown was one of the original scholars who met in Madison, Wisconsin in 1989 to develop Critical Race Theory.

This past year, CRT has become a focal point, used to criticize public education and other diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Often misrepresented, it has been used to foster division in the public arena, particularly around its use in schools and more recently, medical education. Professor Brown will discuss how CRT was conceptualized by original theorists and scholars, the context for the need of the framework, and the underlying theories and thought behind CRT. Prof. Brown is still currently writing about legal arguments regarding race and education, and is working on pieces that examine the legal challenges to anti-CRT legislation.

The talk is expected to run for approximately 45mins with a question and answer portion for approximately 20mins. A webinar zoom link is available for virtual attendance. Refreshments will be provided for in-person attendees; to reduce potential COVID exposure or illness, in-person attendees will be offered a box lunch while leaving the event. This event is open to staff, faculty and students in-person; St. Louis community members and those outside the University are welcome to participate virtually.

We have hit capacity for in-person attendance, therefore we are only able to accommodate for virtual attendance (as of 2.7.2023).

This is a hybrid event: Attend in person, and register below to receive an email reminder before the event. Unable to join us on campus? Tune in remotely: https://www.youtube.com/live/Yjd8iWFfT9g?feature=share
