
Celebrating the Distinguished Career of Dr. Diana Gray
St. Louis, MO—November 20, 2025—In a heartfelt gathering, esteemed colleagues, students, and friends celebrated the exceptional career and achievements of Dr. Diana Gray, who is now embarking on a well-earned retirement. Dr. Gray’s illustrious journey has been marked by her extraordinary contributions to medicine, education, and leadership, making her retirement a momentous occasion for the medical community.
Dr. Gray began her career by earning her Bachelor’s (1977) and Medical (1981) degrees from the University of Illinois. She further honed her expertise in Obstetrics and Gynecology during her residency (1985) at WashU Medicine, where she served as the administrative chief resident. Her pursuit of fellowships in ultrasound imaging (1987) and medical genetics (1990) at WashU laid the foundation for a remarkable career characterized by clinical prowess, educational dedication, and staunch advocacy.

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Gray became renowned for her expertise in diagnostic Ob/Gyn ultrasound and prenatal diagnosis of fetal disorders. As Director of Prenatal Diagnosis and the MSAFP screening program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, her work was groundbreaking. She authored over 80 publications, significantly influencing the field of fetal ultrasound and prenatal genetic diagnostics. In recognition of her seminal contributions, Dr. Gray received the Distinguished Service Award from the WashU Medicine Alumni Association in 2019. Dr. Gray retired with the titles of Physician Emerita and Professor Emerita, respectively.
Dr. Gray’s leadership extended beyond clinical excellence. As the past Division Chief of the Ultrasound and Genetics Division within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, she guided her team with vision, fostering an environment where innovation and collaboration thrived. Her leadership roles on the Faculty Practice Plan Board of Directors and as president of the Academic Women’s Network highlighted her commitment to faculty development and gender equity.
As Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs for 19 years, Dr. Gray spearheaded programs and policies supporting and diversifying faculty leadership. Her efforts in establishing career flexibility through the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Award and her co-leadership in the Senior Leadership Committee on climate and culture have had a lasting impact on the institution.

Nationally, Dr. Gray held prominent roles in organizations such as the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and the AAMC’s Group on Faculty Affairs. Her work with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine Action Collaborative on Preventing Sexual Harassment in Higher Education underscores her dedication to creating inclusive and respectful academic environments.


Dr. Gray’s commitment to education is equally commendable. She has imparted her extensive knowledge to generations of medical students, residents, fellows, and faculty, earning her a revered status as an educator. Her dedication to teaching, from one-on-one clinical guidance to comprehensive didactic courses, is evident through her continuing involvement as a Lifetime member in the Nelson OBGYN Alumni Society.
Dr. Gray’s personal attributes, including her collaborative demeanor and high ethical standards, have made her a cherished colleague and mentor. She has been instrumental in conducting pay equity audits and advocating for parental leave policies, on-site childcare, and back-up dependent care programs, significantly improving the quality of life for all faculty members.
As the medical community bids farewell to Dr. Diana Gray, they celebrate not only her numerous accomplishments but also the profound impact she has had on the lives of countless individuals—patients, colleagues, students, and the wider community. Dr. Gray’s legacy will continue as she remains involved in the department as Professor Emerita.
