DEIA Committee celebrates Women’s History Month

Women’s HERstory Month started in 1980 when a consortium of women’s groups and historians (National Women’s History Project, now National Women’s History Alliance, advocated for a week long celebration, which President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation for. It wasn’t until 1987 that Congress passed Public Law 100-9, officially designating March as “Women’s History Month”. The month of March captures various notable dates including International Women’s DayAbortion Care Provider’s Day, as well as many historic ones such as the first march on Washington by suffragists (1913), formation of the National Women’s Party (1917), and passage of the Title IX Education Amendment Act (prohibited sex-based discrimination in educational institutions in 1972)

“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader”

In honor of Women’s HERstory Month and International Women’s Day, we would like to elevate The Fuller Project! This organization, named in honor of Margaret Fuller, journalist, leader, and feminist advocate, who was the first woman foreign correspondent and wrote with the goal of advancing women in society. The project seeks to conduct honest, investigative global journalism to tell the stories of women in a way that promotes equity, advocacy and meaningful change.

Check out the “That’s What She Said” Exhibit at the St. Louis Library! This interactive display showcases quotes from famous women throughout history until the end of the month.
