Eisenberg appointed Chief, Division of Complex Family Planning

After a national search, we are pleased to announce that David Eisenberg, MD, MPH, FACOG, Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been appointed as Chief of the Division of Complex Family Planning, effective March 1, 2024. He stepped into the position of Interim Chief in December 2022 and is well-positioned to take on the permanent role based on his clinical expertise and leadership experience.

Dr. Eisenberg earned a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience, Minor in Chemistry, magna cum laude, from University of Pittsburgh. He earned his Medical Doctorate from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL. He completed residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University, Chicago, IL and stayed on to complete fellowship training in Family Planning and Contraception. During his fellowship, he earned a Master of Public Health degree. Dr. Eisenberg was recruited to Washington University School of Medicine in 2009 and rose through the ranks to Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Clinician Track.

Since 2011, Dr. Eisenberg has been the Director of the Benign Gynecology Resident Service (Green Team). He is widely recognized as an exceptional clinician who takes care of complex and clinically challenging patients from throughout the region. He has made seminal contributions to the development of clinical guidelines, including the management of pregnancy of unknown location. Dr. Eisenberg is dedicated to teaching students, residents, and fellows and has received multiple teaching and service awards.

Dr. Eisenberg is best known as a national expert, academic leader, and advocate in the subspecialty of complex family planning and is a highly sought-after speaker. His research focuses on the impact of abortion care restrictions on maternal health, development of new methods and applications for contraceptive medications, improving access to comprehensive reproductive and sexual health care, sexually transmitted infection detection and treatment, and he has co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications.  He has served on national committees creating clinical practice guidance at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Planned Parenthood, the CDC and FDA Advisory Panels related to contraception and gynecologic therapeutics. We are grateful for his clinical, educational, research and administrative expertise and for his willingness to serve.

Dr. Eisenberg has held multiple leadership positions in national organizations, including American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the Centers for Disease Control, and Planned Parenthood. While on faculty at Washington University, he served as Medical Director at Planned Parenthood of St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri for 10 years. He has provided continuous administrative service throughout the medical center and university, including the Gynecology Quality Improvement Committee. He is currently the Vice Chair and in-coming Chair of the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council (ECFC) of the School of Medicine.
