Residency

Why did you choose WashU for your residency?

I have been very interested in WashU since early in medical school for so many reasons. Of those, there are two that stand out the most! The first is that the department, as well as the residency program within it, is completely committed to growth and development in the field of OBGYN while still providing exceptional direct patient care. Secondly, the culture within the residency and department is effortlessly inclusive and welcoming, which was very important to me!

Why OBGYN?
I think that OBGYN requires a special mixture of clinical knowledge and empathy, and I feel so honored to help patients through some of their most vulnerable moments with these skills. I also knew that to be able to continue enjoying a long career, I would need a healthy variety in pathophysiology, care settings, and patient relationships, and I think OBGYN has the most variation in these things.

What are you looking forward to the most about being a resident here at WashU?
I am so excited to be involved in special moments, see complicated cases I’ve never seen before, get more experience in “bread and butter” obstetrics and gynecology, and grow to a point where I feel confident managing anything that comes my way. I am also so excited to work with my new co-residents!

What goals do you hope to accomplish during your residency?
My biggest goal is to be a competent and confident obstetrician and gynecologist by the end of my training! I chose WashU because I know that the depth and breadth of experiences here will give me just that. I also know that along the way, I will develop so many skills and relationships, get to be a part of meaningful research, and help make patient’s lives better in any way I can!

What are your research interests?
There are many, but lately I have found myself being more interested in the interactions between patients and healthcare providers, and how to help restore patient trust through education and providing a better patient experience.

Personal

Hometown: St. Louis, MO
Pronouns: she/her/hers

What do you do outside of work?
I love to craft (mostly fiber arts like sewing and embroidery, but some others as well!) and I love thrifting. But I’m happy to do almost any activity as long as it means spending time with my friends and loved ones!

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?
I lived in Bosnia as a child (because my dad is Bosnian) and I went to a Turkish school! At one time I spoke four languages, but that has since faded to closer to about 1.5 languages :).

We know it’s early, but do you have any fellowship plans for after residency?
As of now, no! I fell in love with OBGYN because of the practice variety, and I think that every aspect is so interesting that I don’t want to have to choose just one. Generalist practice is so diverse and special!

What advice would you give medical students applying for a residency in OBGYN?
I unfortunately did not match my first time applying to OBGYN residency, but I have learned so much in my journey of reapplying and ending up in my dream program! I think that it’s important to have strong reflection on what your goals are in training and do your best to find/apply to programs that you feel align with those goals. In the process of that reflection, you’ll also find ways to articulate your passion for the specialty, which will help you through the interview trail! As cheesy as it is, be yourself – you’ll feel when you have a connection with a program, and they will feel it too! And always remember that the match does not define you!
