Inpatient Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Washington University Medical Campus (WUMC), including Barnes-Jewish Hospital, provides extensive experience in the full range of obstetrics and gynecology. Barnes-Jewish Hospital, contains all ObGyn subspecialties, including Maternal Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, and Ultrasound/Genetics. Additionally, our residents see patients at Missouri Baptist Medical Center and St. Louis Children’s Hospital, which complements their training to provide a breadth and depth of experiences that graduate residents prepare for independent practice.
The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Women and Infant’s has a volume of about 4,000 deliveries per year and provides state-of-the-art technology with a full range of obstetric care. Parkview Tower opened in 2018 providing a brand-new inpatient facility for all obstetric and gynecologic services.
Outpatient ambulatory care
Our residents participate in obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics located in the Center for Outpatient Health (link above) at the northern reach of the WUMC campus. In these busy clinics, patients are seen for high-risk obstetric problems or in referrals for complicated gynecologic care.
Continuity Clinics on the WUMC campus are available for all residents in the second, third, and fourth years. Under the supervision of the academic faculty, residents function in practice groups similar to private practice and care for their own patients over the course of the last three years of their training. Emphasis is on learning skills to provide health maintenance in primary medical care settings.
Several subspecialty resident clinics are also housed at the Center for Outpatient Health, including clinics for high-risk obstetrics, diabetes in pregnancy, gynecologic oncology, colposcopy, urogynecology, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and pediatrics and family planning. A unique aspect of our training program includes the care of pregnant patients with opioid use disorder at our C.A.R.E. clinic.
With the increasing shift of medicine to the outpatient setting, the OBGYN residency program provides trainees with the skills to deal effectively with these clinical problems.
In the Center for Outpatient Health, residents work closely with a variety of allied health professionals, including nurse practitioners. On completion of the residency, our graduates will be well prepared to deal with the clinical challenges that ambulatory medicine presents.
