2021 Diversity Week: Community Workshop

11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Zoom (Virtual)

Welcome to the Diversity Week community workshop livestream

“Writing for Liberation” with Jason Vasser-Elong

Jason Vasser-Elong

This virtual writing workshop welcomes dialogue around issues of identity, race and personal experience and challenges participants to examine the intersectionality of their identities. Through poetry and prose, we will illuminate what makes us unique and celebrate those differences.

Participants will gain the most from the workshop by tuning in with the following in hand:

  • paper
  • pen or pencil
  • quarter and penny coins (for reflection activity)

St. Louis native Jason Vasser-Elong is a literary artist, cultural professional and leader in the region’s creative arts scene. After earning his Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from University of Missouri–St. Louis in 2018, Vasser-Elong published his debut collection of poetry – “Shrimp” – and had his work featured in “The St. Louis Anthology” the following year. Community is a central theme throughout Vasser-Elong’s art, and he invites everyone to explore the intersectionality of identity, poetry and all roads in between.

During the live broadcast, Vasser-Elong will be joined by a small group of BJC team members, who will help guide the discussion. Virtual participants will be invited to join in the conversation through an online chat.

11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., September 24, 2021
